FINE PROOF ETCHING BY GEORGE CRUIKSHANK, WITH HIS PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION. Most probably an illustration from W. H. Ainsworth's The Tower of London (1840)

A beautiful impression on India paper laid, the image measuring 5 x 4 in., the plate mark measuring 9 3/8 x 6 1/8 in.; glazed and in a simple thin black wood frame, the whole measuring 15 3/8 x 10 1/2 in.

A poignant etching, signed “George Cruikshank” in the plate, showing Lady Jane Grey in her Tower of London chamber, dressed in a dark gown with long flowing skirts, kneeling with her head on a chair, prostrate with grief. There are a couple of light spots on the margin, not affecting the plate or the image; the condition is otherwise fine. INSCRIBED IN PENCIL BY CRUIKSHANK IN THE LOWER MARGIN: “James Bacon, Esq. / with the kind regards of / Geo Cruikshank”. An attractive and desirable item from the hand of the master
