Brehm, Worth (1883-1928)

Illustration for Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, reproduced in the Harper & Brothers edition of 1923

Charcoal on paper, signed lower left. The drawing measures 23 x 17-3/4 inches. , [Published New York: Harper & Brothers, 1923]. Matted and handsomely framed, with overall dimensions approximately 31 x 25 inches. Fine condition.

A poignant and surperbly drawn depiction of the scene when Huck, out hunting on Jackson's Island, meets the runaway slave, Jim. Huck stands at the left of the drawing, while Jim, at the foot of a large tree, kneels in supplication. The drama of the moment is enhanced by the artist's use of light, which, coming from behind Huck, falls on the tree, bringing the figure of Jim into sharp relief. This is one of the finest Brehm drawings we have ever seen. A DRAMATIC AND MEMORABLE ILLUSTRATION TO TWAIN'S GREAT CLASSIC
