According to Houfe, Herbert Cole was an important artist, known for his work as a draughtsman, illustrator, engraver and designer of bookplates. His work, using either “a flamboyant art nouveau style or …comic illustrations”, appeared in many magazines in the last decade of the nineteenth century, and in the early 1900s he was “combining a fluid pen with the most sensuous colouring, his designs [were] always inventive” recalling the work of Walter Crane
