(Armstrong, Henry) Van Vechten, Carl

Portrait photograph of world champion boxer Henry Armstrong

Half-length, seated. Gelatin silver print. 14. x 11 inches, New York: July 15, 1937. Fine. With atelier stamp in rear and pencilled notes recording the name of the subject, date, and identification number of the print("XLM K 20").

Superb image of the man known as Henry Armstrong, whose real name was Henry Jackson, who is still the only fighter to ever hold world championships in three divisions (featherweight, lightweight and welterweight) simultaneously. 1937, the year Van Vechten's photo was taken, was the year of Armstrong's incredible achievment of winning 27 fights in a row. The Mississippi native moved to St. Louis when he was four. He later lived in Pittsburgh and Los Angeles, where, after a prolific amateur career, he turned professional because he failed to qualify for the 1932 Olympic squad!
