Photograph of the elm tree (now gone) of Cambridge, Mass., under which George Washington (by legend) took command of the Continental Army on July 3, 1775

Silver print. 8-3/4 x 8-3/4 inches, [Cambridge, Mass.: ca. 1920?]. Pencilled notes on rear, small marginal stain to lower right corner.

Fine large photograph of the "Washington elm", which was enshrined in 1902 and died a little over twenty years later. This photograph shows the tree already moribund, with monument beneath bearing the carved inscription which preserved the legend: UNDER THIS TREE WASHINGTON FIRST TOOK COMMAND OF THE AMERICAN ARMY JULY 3 1775
