Clark, Roland

“Twilight”. Drypoint Etching of Three Ducks Landing

Signed “Roland Clark” lower right and captioned in lower margin. 122 x 96 mm (Image) with margins, on a larger sheet (24 x 19 cm), [New York: 1920]. Number 8 of 40 examples. Framed.

A choice early Clark etching, a scene of three ducks descending to a patch of open water, with a stand of reeds at right, and a wooded shore in the background. Ordeman records that Clark (1874-1957) was already an established painter when his friend Phillip Suval suggested in 1919 that he try his hand at print-making. Over the next two decades he created a distinctive body of work, including the classic works for the Derrydale Press, Stray Shots (1931) and the retrospective volume, Roland Clark’s Etchings (1938) Ordeman Appendix VI p. 104.
