Fine portrait of the famous art critic and connoisseur (1865-1959) relaxing at his villa, taken by the master photographer Kessel (1902-1995) whose work (especially for LIFE magazine) has received universal admiration. (Kessel's sensitive photographs of works of art has been particularly singled out for praise). Berenson's wife Mary Smith was the sister of Logan Pearsall Smith, and of Alys Pearsall Smith, the first wife of Bertrand Russell.
