Van Vechten, as a young man, began his career as a music critic for the New York Times, and music was a lifelong passion. At the time Van Vechten took this photo, Paul Bowles, at age 34, was making a name for himself as a composer and writing a music column for the New York Herald-Tribune. His celebrated first novel, The Sheltering Sky, appeared in 1949
