Cased quarter-plate ambrotype, three-quarters length portrait, heightened in gilt and tinted. 2-3/4 x 2 in. (sight), [ca. 1855]. In embossed wood and paper case with floral design, original clasp, elaborate gilt protector and oval mat; fine.

A stunning image with expceptional clarity and detail, depicting an antebellum black woman of some means, in fine dress and with gold pendant earrings, rings and brooch (all heightened in gilt). She gazes directly at the lens her left arm resting on a shawl
