Item Details

(Connecticut Photographs)

A collection of approximately 110 photographs of rural, domestic and municipal Connecticut, Ca. 1885

About 2/3 of the images measure 4-1/2 x 8 inches, plus backing board, or 6-1/2 x 10-1/2 inches overall; the remaining photographs mostly measure 3 x 3-3/4 inches plus backing. All have punched linen hinges for insertion in a loose-leaf album, Connecticut: Ca. 1885. Two images with vertical cracks, one with a small portion torn out, boards slightly warped and with occasional chipping to edges, else very good.

A splendid and varied collection of amateur photographs, some of high professional quality, of Connecticut (and a few of Massachusetts) scenes, a few captioned in pencil. Included are family views (pets, houses, mother feeding chickens), sporting subjects (angling, yachting, ice fishing), interesting structures (houses, barns, lighthouses, windmills, water mills), town views including several of Meriden, beach scenes, wilderness scenes, ships (including paddle-wheel steamers) and harbors, and a good deal more. There is no indication of the identity of the photographer other than the initials G.A.F. on the first photo, but he (or she) has produced an historic and unique archive
