Bemelmans, Ludwig

Watercolor studies of two children and the head of a young woman, signed “Bemelmans”

Image 9-3/4 x 4-1/2 inches; matted and framed to 17 x 11-3/4 inches overall, [N.p: n.d.]. Fine condition.

Ludwig Bemelmans (1892-1962), Austrian-born American painter and writer, drew on his hotel and restaurant experiences for many of his stories and novels, which he often illustrated with his own sophisticated drawings and watercolors. Although he also wrote for adults, he is perhaps best known for his children's books, notably the Madeline series, one of which, Madeline's Rescue, won the 1954 Caldecott Award. These studies may well be connected with one of the Madeline books
