Pencil on paper. 7-1/4 x 6-1/4 inches, Fine.A fine sympathetic full-face drawing of the photographer, undoubtedly done from life. Floyd MacMillan Davis (1896-1966) began by doing advertising art, and in the 1930s began illustrating southern rural scenes and people forthe works of William Faulkner, MacKinlay Kantor and others. During WWII he was selected as a War Department artist and painted in various war theatres: many of his paintings were reproduced by LIFE and now hang in the Pentagon. Recipient of numerous awards, he was regarded as one of the great figures of American illustration
