Casson, Hugh

Original architectural drawing, signed and inscribed, “For Alfred Eisenstaedt”, London, November 14, 1951

Pen and ink on paper. 7-3/4 x 5-1/2 inches, Fine.

This drawing, presented to the photographer, was done at an interesting time: Casson, an architect who had spent the war in the Camouflage Service had become Architecture Director for the successful 1951 Festival of Britain, and on the date of this drawing was only six weeks away from receiving a knighthood for his services. He subsequently became, his biographer states, “the best known architect in Britain”, creating a number of prominent buildings, from the Elephant House at the London Zoo to an ambitious series of buildings for Cambridge University. He was elected President of the Royal Academy, and was a noted writer and television spokesman for architecture and the arts
