(Boxing) Rowbotham, J.B. and J. Brown

“The Great Contest Between Sayers and Heenan For £200 Aside and the Championship. The Fioght lasted 2 hr. 6 m. and resulted in a draw. Fought near Farnborough on the 17th of April 1860.” Photographs by G. Bonner. Engraved by J.R. Mackrell and J.B. Rowbotham

Hand-coloured engraving. Image 17-1/2 x 22 inches; matted and framed to 25 x 30 inches overall, Ca. 1860. Central strip of slight darkening , else near fine. Framed and glazed. Label of Arthur Ackermann, NYC.

A large depiction of the contest, held, as usual, outdoors. A prominent feature is the rendering of about 100 actual individuals in the foreground (all, of course, staring at the artist, with their backs to the boxers) their faces evidently reproduced from photographs--a marginal legend states “The Photographs by G. Bonner”. The fight, according to the caption, lasted 2 hours 6 minutes at Farnborough, April 17, 1860, and resulted in a draw
