(Bicycles) Pennell, Joseph
Original drawing of a man with a motorized bicycle in a mountainous setting
Pennell, Joseph India ink on thin paper, laid down on board; signed “Jo. Pennell” lower left and captioned “If this road is too bad one can shore up”, lower right. 9-1/2 x 14-1/4 inches, n.p: n.d., (c. 1900).Joseph Pennell [1860-1926] was a noted illustrator, but his forte was architectural renderings in ink, oils and watercolors, etchings and lithographs. He was also the author of a number of books devoted art and travel subjects. This drawing, according to a Century magazine label on the verso, was done for an article on the theme of “Motor-cycle in Alps.” We are unable to identify the machine precisely, but knowing Pennell's reputation for accuracy, it is likely to be a valid depiction. Cycle historians kindly note!
