[Darley, F. O. C.]

"What no soup?" Original pen and ink drawing of a Civil War soldier walking into a barber shop where two men are getting a lathering for a shave, and a third is tying his cravat in front of a mirror; behind the barbers is a sign that reads "Jupiter Tonans Hair Restorative". Unsigned, but in the style of Darley

Image area 11-5/8" x 8-5/8", in 17-1/4" x 14" frame, nd. Some light foxing, otherwise very nice in a gold leaf frame.

The soldier is quite dishevelled and his uniform is in tatters; he is being looked upon with great distaste by the men in the barber shop, all of whom are quite foppish. On the back is a clipped piece of paper with the title above a parenthetical line " (Note. getting a lathering)". It should be noted, of course, that barbers frequently served as surgeons during the Civil War (largely because they had a steady supply of sharp razors and scissors). A nice bit of satire
